Stripe trial conversion: four leaks, five fixes

Where a Stripe free trial loses revenue (no card, a failed first charge, a forgotten trial, no reminder) and five steps to close each leak.

The short answer

A Stripe trial loses money in four places: the trial starts with no usable payment method, the card fails at the first charge, the buyer forgets they started a trial, or nobody reminds them before it ends. Each has a different fix, and you can measure all four with your own counts.

Four places a trial leaks revenue

LeakWhat happens in StripeWhat closes it
No payment methodA trial can start without one; at the end Stripe creates an invoice that may go unpaid, or cancels or pauses, depending on your settingCollect the card at signup, or collect it at a clear moment before the end
The first charge failsStripe attempts the invoice when the trial ends; if it fails, retries follow your billing settingsVerify the card up front, and keep retries and reminders switched on
A forgotten trialThe buyer sees a charge they did not expectShow the date and amount at signup and repeat them in the reminder
No reminderNothing arrives before the end unless you send itUse the pre-end event and send your own message

What Stripe documents about each leak

  • No payment method. Stripe's trial documentation states that a subscription with a trial period does not need a payment method, and that the missing payment method setting at the end of the trial can create an invoice (the default; the subscription becomes past due if it cannot be paid), cancel the subscription, or pause it. Stripe also warns that starting trials with no card can let spammers create many fake customers and subscriptions (read 19 Oct 2026).
  • A failed first charge. Stripe's Smart Retries documentation recommends 8 tries within 2 weeks (read 18 Oct 2026), and the Billing page states an average recovery rate of 55% for businesses using Stripe Billing (read 18 Oct 2026). Those are Stripe's own figures about its own product, not a promise about your account.
  • Reminders. Stripe sends an event before a trial ends, 3 days ahead by default in the Dashboard, which you use to send your own email, and it sends hosted reminder emails 7 days ahead (read 19 Oct 2026). If the trial is shorter than the configured interval, the event fires immediately.

Worked example: what a few points are worth

The trial conversion rate calculator starts with 400 trials started, 60 that paid, and an example price of $49 a month. That is 15.0% to paid and $2,940 of MRR. Adding 5 points takes the rate to 20.0%: 80 paying accounts, which is 20 more, $980 a month and $11,760 over 12 months. 33.3% on the same trial base is a different figure from "5 points", and the difference matters when you report it.

For the failed first charge, the failed payment recovery calculator starts with $50,000 of MRR, 5% of renewal value failing on the first try, 40% recovered today, and compares that with 55%, the average Stripe states for Stripe Billing. It computes $18,000 lost a year today and $4,500 saved a year at the comparison rate. The failure rate and today's recovery rate are the calculator's example inputs; replace them with yours.

Five steps to improve it

  1. Measure first. Count trials started and trials that paid for the same start cohort, then compute the rate. Do not mix cohorts, or paid can look bigger than started.
  2. Decide the card moment. Either collect it at signup or at a defined point before the end, and set the missing payment method behavior in Stripe to match.
  3. Verify the card before the trial starts when you can. A card that fails after a week of free use is a lost customer and a wasted trial; a card checked at signup fails early, while the buyer is still on your page. Card holds do this for the plan price.
  4. Send two messages: one at signup that states the trial end date, the amount and how to cancel, and one before the end, driven by the pre-end event.
  5. Keep recovery on for the first charge: Smart Retries on, a clear failed-payment email, and a way for the buyer to update the card without contacting you.

Decision checklist

  • Do you know your trial-to-paid rate for the last full cohort, as paid divided by started?
  • Is the end-of-trial behavior for a missing payment method set deliberately, rather than left on the default?
  • Does the buyer see the charge date and the amount before they start?
  • Is there a reminder before the end that you send, not only Stripe?
  • Are retries on, and does the buyer have a self-serve way to fix a failed card?
  • Do you get a message when a capture or a hold fails, so someone looks the same day? Alerts cover that.
For context, ChartMogul's January 2026 study of 200 products reports a median free-to-paid rate of 8% and 30% for trials that require a credit card (read 18 Oct 2026). Compare your rate with these only as a rough orientation; products and prices differ. For fraud checks on cards, see the Stripe Radar comparison.
Which trial-to-paid rate is solid for a Stripe trial?

ChartMogul's January 2026 study of 200 products reports a median of 8% free-to-paid and 30% for trials that require a credit card. Your rate depends on price, audience and how you start the trial.

What happens if a Stripe trial ends with no payment method?

It follows the missing payment method setting: the default creates an invoice (the subscription becomes past due if it cannot be paid), or you can cancel or pause the subscription.

When does Stripe warn me that a trial is about to end?

Stripe sends an event before the end, 3 days before by default in the Dashboard, and hosted reminder emails 7 days before. Use the event to send your own reminder.

What are Smart Retries?

Stripe's automatic retry logic for failed invoices. Its documentation recommends 8 tries within 2 weeks.

How much of a failed first charge does Stripe recover?

Stripe states an average recovery rate of 55% for businesses using Stripe Billing. That is Stripe's figure for its own product, so use your own recovery rate in the calculator.

Does TrialValid change my Stripe subscription settings?

TrialValid places a hold at signup, creates the free-trial subscription on the saved card and captures before the end, then credits the first invoice. How each step and failure is handled is in the trial lifecycle documentation.
