How this was worked out
  1. $100.00 x 2.9% = $2.90, rounded to the cent.
  2. $2.90 + $0.30 fixed = $3.20 fee.
  3. $100.00 - $3.20 = $96.80 kept, an effective rate of 3.20%.
  4. To keep $100.00, charge $103.30: ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) solved to the cent, with the fee of $3.30 rounded the way the processor rounds it.
  5. Adding the fee to the price instead ($103.20) would leave $99.91, which is $0.09 short, because the fee is also charged on the added amount.

How it works

Stripe's US price for a domestic card is a percentage of the payment plus a fixed amount. The calculator multiplies the payment by the percent, rounds to the cent, adds the fixed part, and subtracts the total from the payment to show what you keep. Switch the mode to start from the amount you want to keep and the calculator finds the charge that leaves it.

In symbols: fee = round(a x r) + f, and keep = a - fee, where a is the payment, r the percent rate as a fraction and f the fixed fee. To keep a target t, the charge c must satisfy c - fee(c) >= t. The closed form is c = (t + f) / (1 - r), solved to the whole cent because the fee is rounded.

Edge cases

  • An amount of zero or a blank field shows a prompt, not a result.
  • A percent rate of 100 or more is invalid: no charge could leave anything.
  • In the target mode, a target at or below the fixed fee is invalid, and the message says so.
  • The rate and fixed fee are editable, so you can enter a negotiated rate or a plan with different pricing.
  • Fees on refunds, payouts in other currencies and Connect accounts are not modelled. Check the pricing page for those.

Questions

How much does Stripe charge on a $100 card payment in the US?

A domestic card is listed at 2.9% + $0.30, so a $100 payment costs $3.20 and you keep $96.80. That is an effective rate of 3.20%, because the fixed part is the same on every payment.

Why do small payments cost a bigger share?

The fixed $0.30 does not shrink with the amount. On $10 the fee is $0.59, or 5.90%. On $1,000 it is $29.30, or 2.93%. Low-priced plans and one-off small charges feel this most.

How do I charge a customer so I keep exactly $100?

Charge $103.30. The fee on that charge is $3.30, which leaves $100. Piling the $3.20 on top of the price instead gives a $103.20 charge that leaves $99.91, $0.09 short, because the fee is also taken on the added amount.

What do international cards and currency conversion add?

The pricing page lists 1.5% more for international cards and 1% more when currency conversion is required. Stacked on the domestic rate, an international card costs 4.4% + $0.30, which is $4.70 on $100. With conversion as well it is 5.4% + $0.30, or $5.70.

What does a dispute cost?

Stripe lists a dispute received fee of $15.00 for each dispute. On a $100 payment that is 15% of the payment and applies to every dispute, whatever the amount. Put it next to the cost of the goods or service to see the whole loss.

Is Stripe Billing a separate charge on top of card fees?

Stripe Billing adds 0.7% of the volume it handles, on the pay-as-you-go tier and on top of payment processing. With 400 subscribers paying $49 a month, card fees come to $688.00 a month and Billing to $137.20, so the two together take $825.20 of $19,600.

Does Stripe round each fee itself?

Fees are worked out payment by payment in whole cents, so the fee on ten $10 payments, $5.90, is not the fee on one $100 payment, $3.20. The calculator rounds half up to the cent on each payment you enter, as the fee engine on this site does everywhere. For a grossed-up charge, it finds the smallest whole-cent charge that leaves your target.

Once you know the fee, put it into your margin with the gross margin calculator and see what a failed card costs with the failed payment recovery calculator. A change in price moves the fee too, so test it in the price increase calculator.
