How this was worked out
  1. Standard UK card is 1.5% + £0.20.
  2. The percentage part: 1.5% of £100.00 is £1.50, rounded half up to the smallest unit.
  3. Add the fixed fee: £1.50 + £0.20 = £1.70.
  4. The fee is £1.70, so you keep £100.00 - £1.70 = £98.30.
  5. To keep the full £100.00, charge £101.73: the fee on that is £1.73, which leaves £100.00.

How Stripe prices a UK payment

Stripe's UK price list charges a percentage of the payment plus a fixed amount in pence. A standard UK card is 1.5% + £0.20, so on £100 the percentage part is £1.50 and the fixed part is £0.20, a fee of £1.70. The tool above repeats that sum for any amount and shows the balance that arrives.

In words: take the rate of the payment, round it to the nearest penny, then add the fixed amount. In symbols: f = round(a × r) + c, and what you keep is k = a − f, with a the payment, r the rate and c the fixed amount.

Going the other way means finding the smallest charge g that leaves your target after its own fee. To receive £100 on a standard card that charge is £101.73. Simply tacking the £1.70 onto the price does not work, because that bigger charge has a bigger fee: £1.73 on £101.70 leaves £99.97.

Why small payments cost more in pounds

The percentage grows with the payment, but the £0.20 part is the same on every charge. That makes small tickets the expensive ones in relative terms. The table runs a standard UK card across eight sizes.

Fee by payment method

The same £100 payment lands very differently depending on how it is paid. Premium UK cards cost £3.00, Klarna starts at £5.34, and Bacs Direct Debit costs £1.00. Klarna is listed as a starting price, so treat that row as a floor.

Bacs Direct Debit: the minimum and the cap

Bacs is the one UK method on Stripe's list priced as a share with limits at both ends: 1%, minimum £0.20, cap £4.00. Any payment up to £20.49 pays the £0.20 minimum, and any payment from £399.80 up pays the £4.00 cap.

A made up example for a subscription business: 150 subscribers paying £35 a month cost £109.50 in fees on standard UK cards and £52.50 on Bacs, a monthly difference of £57.00. A payment of £20 on Bacs still pays £0.20, because the minimum applies.

Cards from outside the UK and currency conversion

Cards issued in the European Economic Area and elsewhere sit on separate lines of the price list, and a 2% conversion charge applies on top when the currency has to change. The two together add up quickly, as the table shows for a £100 payment.

Charging so a round sum reaches you

If you price so that a fixed amount arrives, the charge has to rise by the fee and by the fee on the fee. This table solves it for a standard UK card.

Disputes

Stripe's UK price list adds a dispute received fee of £20.00 for each dispute, separate from the original payment fee. It is a flat amount, so it weighs most on small orders: 80% of a £25 payment but 2% of a £1,000 one.

Notes and edge cases

  • Amounts are worked in pence. A payment that rounds to zero pence is rejected with a message instead of a result.
  • Add-ons only apply where the price list applies them: currency conversion is tied to EEA and international cards, so ticking it on a UK card changes nothing and the steps say so.
  • Network fees can apply in rare cases on top of dispute fees, which the tool cannot predict.
  • The tool covers Stripe's published UK card, Klarna and Bacs lines. It leaves out add-on products priced separately, such as Billing or Radar.

Frequently asked questions

How much of a £100 standard UK card payment does Stripe keep?

£1.70, so £98.30 reaches you. That is 1.5% of the payment (£1.50) plus the fixed £0.20, a share of 1.7%.

Why is a £10 payment so much more expensive in percentage terms?

The fixed £0.20 does not shrink with the payment. On £10 the fee is £0.35, which is 3.5% of the payment. On £1 it is £0.22, a share of 22.0%.

How much does currency conversion add?

Stripe's UK price list adds 2% when conversion is needed on EEA and international cards. An EEA card on £100 costs £2.70 without it and £4.70 with it. An international card goes from £3.35 to £5.35.

At what size does the Bacs Direct Debit cap start to apply?

The fee is 1% of the payment, so it reaches the £4.00 cap at £399.80. Above that the fee stays flat: £4.00 on £1,000, against £15.20 for a standard card.

How do I receive a full £50 after Stripe fees on a UK card?

Charge £50.96. The fee on that charge is £0.96, which leaves exactly £50. Charging £50 plus the fee on £50 would fall a penny or two short.

What happens to the fee when a customer disputes a payment?

Stripe's UK page lists a dispute received fee of £20.00 for each dispute. On a £100 payment that is 20% on top of the amount at stake.

How is the fee rounded?

The percentage part is rounded half up to the penny first, then the fixed £0.20 is added. A £10.50 payment, for example, has a percentage part of £0.16.

When were these rates read?

They were read from Stripe's UK pricing page on 19 Oct 2026. Prices on that page can change, so confirm anything large against it before you rely on it.
