How this was worked out
- Australian card is 1.65% + A$0.30.
- The percentage part: 1.65% of A$100.00 is A$1.65, rounded half up to the smallest unit.
- Add the fixed fee: A$1.65 + A$0.30 = A$1.95.
- The fee is A$1.95, so you keep A$100.00 - A$1.95 = A$98.05.
- Stripe states its Australian card and PayTo fees include GST, so the fee shown is the whole amount taken.
- To keep the full A$100.00, charge A$101.98: the fee on that is A$1.98, which leaves A$100.00.
What Stripe charges in Australia
A local Australian card costs 1.65% + A$0.30, and Stripe states that the figure includes GST. Take A$100: the percentage part is A$1.65, the fixed part A$0.30, and the total taken is A$1.95. Your balance receives A$98.05.
As a sentence, the fee is the rate times the payment, rounded to the nearest cent, plus the fixed amount. As algebra, f = round(a × r) + c and what you keep is a − f. GST is already inside both parts, so there is no separate tax line to work out.
Local cards, international cards and conversion
International cards are priced at 3.5% + A$0.30, which is A$3.80 on A$100. When the currency has to be converted, a further 2% applies and the rate becomes 5.5%: A$5.80 on the same payment. Conversion applies to the international line only, so a local card never carries it.

|---|---|---|---|
| Australian card | 1.65% + A$0.30 | A$1.95 | A$98.05 |

| PayTo or BECS | 1% + A$0.30, cap A$3.50 | A$1.30 | A$98.70 |

Setting a price that nets a round figure
The charge that leaves a chosen amount is found by solving the sum backwards, because the fee grows with the charge. The table gives the charge for a local card.
| You want to receive | Charge the customer | Fee on that charge |
|---|---|---|
| A$10.00 | A$10.47 | A$0.47 |
| A$25.00 | A$25.72 | A$0.72 |
| A$50.00 | A$51.14 | A$1.14 |
| A$150.00 | A$152.82 | A$2.82 |
| A$500.00 | A$508.69 | A$8.69 |
| A$1,000.00 | A$1,017.08 | A$17.08 |
Things to keep in mind
- Disputes: Stripe lists a dispute received fee of A$25.00 for each dispute, which is 50% of a A$50 payment.
- Amounts are worked in cents with half cents rounded up, and a result that would be zero is refused with a message.
- Network fees can apply in rare cases and are not predictable from the price list.
- Billing, Radar and other products priced separately by Stripe are not part of this tool.
- Prices for the United States, in dollars, are on the Stripe fee calculator.
