How Square prices a sale in Canada
Square's Canadian list has four ways a customer can pay on card plus Afterpay. Credit in person is 2.5%, debit in person is 0.75% + CA$0.07, an online or invoice sale is 2.8% + CA$0.30, and a keyed in sale is 3.3% + CA$0.15. Choose the line that matches how the money arrives and the tool does the arithmetic.
The formula in words: multiply the sale by the rate, round to the cent, add any fixed amount, and subtract the total from the sale. In symbols, f = round(a × r) + c and k = a − f. Nothing here is estimated: the same function drives the tool, the tables below and the sentences you are reading.
Every payment line on one sale
Here is a CA$100 sale on each line. In person debit is the cheapest at CA$0.82; credit costs CA$2.50, online CA$3.10, keyed in CA$3.45 and Afterpay CA$6.30.

Cards from outside Canada
A card issued outside Canada carries an extra 1.5% on three lines. The table repeats the CA$100 sale with that add-on switched on, and the debit line is left out because the price list does not mark it.
| Line | Canadian card | Card from outside Canada | Extra cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit card in person | CA$2.50 | CA$4.00 | CA$1.50 |
| Online store, checkout, API or online invoice | CA$3.10 | CA$4.60 | CA$1.50 |
| Keyed in, card on file or payment link with Virtual Terminal | CA$3.45 | CA$4.95 | CA$1.50 |

A made up example for a market stall with 120 sales of CA$25 a month: all debit costs CA$31.20 and all credit costs CA$75.60. At CA$20 a debit sale pays only CA$0.22.
Setting the price to keep a round figure
The fee depends on the charge itself, so covering it means solving for the charge, not tacking the fee onto the price. These are the charges for an online sale.
| You want to receive | Charge the customer | Fee on that charge |
|---|---|---|
| CA$10.00 | CA$10.60 | CA$0.60 |
| CA$25.00 | CA$26.03 | CA$1.03 |
| CA$50.00 | CA$51.75 | CA$1.75 |
| CA$100.00 | CA$103.19 | CA$3.19 |
| CA$200.00 | CA$206.07 | CA$6.07 |
| CA$1,000.00 | CA$1,029.12 | CA$29.12 |
What the tool leaves out
- Hardware, software subscriptions and instant transfer fees are priced elsewhere on the same page and are not part of a sale fee.
- Keyed in sales overtake online sales on size: above CA$30.16 the keyed rate costs more.
- An amount that rounds to zero cents is refused with a message instead of a number.
- The price list shows one Afterpay rate for the whole Afterpay product, so the tool treats it as one line.
- Dollars and the United States version of this tool are on the Square fee calculator.
Questions about Square fees in Canada
What does Square take from a CA$100 online sale in Canada?
CA$3.10 for a card not present sale at 2.8% + CA$0.30, leaving CA$96.90. That is 3.10% of the sale.
Is debit really that much cheaper than credit in person?
On the price list, yes. A debit tap or insert costs 0.75% + CA$0.07 while a credit card costs 2.5%. On CA$100 that is CA$0.82 against CA$2.50, and on CA$1,000 it is CA$7.57 against CA$25.00.
What extra applies to a card issued outside Canada?
The price list adds 1.5% to the credit in person, online and keyed in lines. A CA$100 online sale goes from CA$3.10 to CA$4.60, and a credit card tap from CA$2.50 to CA$4.00. The debit line carries no such add-on.
When does a keyed in sale cost more than an online one?
Keyed in is 3.3% + CA$0.15 against 2.8% + CA$0.30 online, so the keyed rate is higher once a payment passes CA$30.16. At CA$100 the fees are CA$3.45 and CA$3.10.
What price leaves CA$200 after an online sale?
Charge CA$206.07. The fee on that is CA$6.07, and CA$200 is left. Adding the fee on CA$200 to the price instead would leave you a few cents short.
What does Afterpay cost through Square?
The price list shows a single Afterpay rate of 6% + CA$0.30: CA$6.30 on CA$100, which is 6.30%.
How are the cents rounded?
The percentage part is rounded half up to the cent, then any fixed amount is added. The CA$5 online sale, for example, costs CA$0.44.
How recent are these rates?

The same tool for Australia and the US
Square prices cards differently in Australia, where there is no fixed fee on card sales, and the United States page starts from dollars. For the same sale on Stripe see the Canadian Stripe calculator, and use the gross margin calculator to see what a fee does to your margin.
