Where A$100.00 goes
  • You keep: A$96.80
  • PayPal fee: A$3.20
How this was worked out
  1. Commercial transactions is 2.9% + A$0.30.
  2. The percentage part: 2.9% of A$100.00 is A$2.90, rounded half up to the smallest unit.
  3. Add the fixed fee: A$2.90 + A$0.30 = A$3.20.
  4. The fee is A$3.20, so you keep A$100.00 - A$3.20 = A$96.80.
  5. To keep the full A$100.00, charge A$103.30: the fee on that is A$3.30, which leaves A$100.00.

The Australian fee in one sentence

Commercial payments to an Australian PayPal account pay 2.9% + A$0.30, so A$100 becomes A$96.80 after A$3.20. Other payment types change the percentage or drop the fixed fee, and the tool lets you choose between them.

How each step is calculated:

text
percentage part = round(amount x (rate + surcharges))
fee = percentage part + fixed
keep            = amount - fee

PayPal notes that for Australian customers the Combined Financial Services Guide and Product Disclosure Statement prevails if it differs from the fee page this tool reads, so treat the result as an estimate and check the guide for your own agreement.

QR code payments have no fixed fee

At 1.2% flat, the QR rate costs the same share on every sale, so it is the one row here where a small sale is not penalised. The commercial row, which carries A$0.30, is the one that hurts small sales most.

Questions

What is the PayPal fee on an A$100 sale in Australia?

On the commercial rate of 2.9% + A$0.30 the fee is A$3.20 and you keep A$96.80. Charge A$103.30 if you want the full A$100 to land after the fee.

Why is the QR code rate so much lower?

PayPal lists QR code payments at 1.2% with no fixed fee, against 2.9% + A$0.30 for commercial payments. On A$75 that is A$0.90 instead of A$2.48, which is 1.2% of the sale instead of 3.3%.

How much extra does an overseas buyer add?

Commercial and QR code payments from outside Australia add 1% to the percentage, so an A$100 commercial sale rises from A$3.20 to A$4.20. Advanced card payments add a larger 2.1%, which takes an A$100 card sale from A$1.80 to A$3.90.

Is the advanced card product worth it?

For local buyers it is the cheapest card route in the table: 1.5% + A$0.30 against 2.9% + A$0.30. A A$900 domestic sale costs A$13.80 on it and A$26.40 on the commercial rate. The gap narrows for overseas cards, where the surcharge of 2.1% puts it at A$32.70, only A$2.70 less than the commercial rate with its smaller surcharge.

Where do micropayments fit in?

They cost 5% + A$0.05 and are set by application. That beats the commercial rate for sales up to A$12.09; from A$12.10 the commercial rate is cheaper. An A$6 sale loses A$0.35 on micropayments and A$0.47 on the commercial rate.

How much is the currency conversion?

PayPal sets one conversion rate for most cases and a higher one for some, for example when a buyer pays in a currency different from the listing's. The tool uses 3% for converting what you receive, which takes an A$100 commercial sale to A$6.20.

What does a card chargeback cost?

The chargeback fee on PayPal's Australian page is A$15.00. On an A$100 sale that is 15.0% added to the sale you lose.

The US PayPal fee calculator shows the American table; PayPal fees for UK and PayPal fees for Canada cover the other two countries. The Stripe fee calculator and Square's run the same sums for those processors.
