What Supabase is

Supabase gives each project its own Postgres database and wraps the pieces an application keeps rebuilding around it: user sign-in, file storage, realtime subscriptions, serverless functions, vector storage and scheduled jobs. The product list on its pages names database, auth, functions, compute, realtime, storage, vector and cron.

For a SaaS founder the practical meaning is a backend you can stand up in an afternoon and keep as the product grows. The pricing page describes the path as starting free, collaborating with a team, then scaling.

Features worth knowing

  • A dedicated Postgres database for every project, with unlimited API requests on the free plan.
  • Auth that is priced by monthly active users: 50,000 on Free and 100,000 on Pro, with social sign-in and custom SMTP on the free plan.
  • File storage, a basic CDN, realtime messaging and edge functions, each with included amounts on every plan.
  • Compute add-ons from Micro at $10 a month up to 64 vCPUs and 256 GB of memory, billed hourly.
  • A spend cap that is on by default for Pro, so costs stay within the included quota until you switch it off.
  • Paid add-ons listed on the page include a custom domain from $100 a month and point-in-time recovery.

Who is behind it

The company page presents Supabase as part of one of the fastest growing open source communities and lists its investors and press coverage. It says the company is fully remote, with a strong affinity for open source maintainers and former founders.

It describes an engineering team drawn from AWS, Google, Palantir, Stripe and other Y Combinator companies. We read no more than the page states and make no further claim about the company.

Pricing as the vendor states it

Supabase has four plans. Free and Pro show their included amounts below as listed on 19 Oct 2026; overage rates apply after the included amount on Pro.

Compute is billed per project: Micro $10, Small $15 a month, with larger sizes listed up to 16XL. Because paid plans include a $10 credit, a single Micro project on Pro costs the plan price alone.

Three worked months on Pro, built from the listed rates (our own examples, not Supabase figures):

Pro plan: $25.00; Compute: 1 Micro project, less the $10 credit: $0.00; Auth: 20,000 monthly active users (100,000 included): $0.00; Disk: 3 GB (8 GB included): $0.00; Egress: 40 GB (250 GB included): $0.00. Total $25.00. Adding a second Micro project takes it to $35.00.

A growing app at 120,000 monthly active users, 12 GB of disk and 300 GB of egress on one Micro project: Pro plan: $25.00; Compute: 1 Micro project, less the $10 credit: $0.00; Auth: 120,000 monthly active users (100,000 included): $65.00; Disk: 12 GB (8 GB included): $0.50; Egress: 300 GB (250 GB included): $4.50. Total $95.00 a month, almost all of it from users past the included 100,000.

Alternatives

Firebase, Neon, a managed Postgres from a cloud provider, and running Postgres yourself. Supabase's own site offers pages for switching from Firebase and from Neon.

Who Supabase fits

  • A solo founder or small team that wants Postgres, sign-in and storage without assembling them.
  • A product whose user count is easy to forecast, so the per-user charge past the included amount is predictable.
  • A team that wants to start free and add paid features only when the product earns them.
  • Less suited to a product with a very large free user base, because the monthly-active-user rate is the line that grows.

Is it worth it

At the entry point the price is modest for a first product: free to start, then $25 a month with a compute credit that covers one small instance. The cost to watch is auth, since the rate per extra monthly active user is the biggest line in the growing-app example above.

The free plan pauses a project after a week of inactivity, so use it for building and testing and move to Pro before real customers depend on it.

Supabase and a card-backed trial

Supabase offers a free plan rather than a timed trial, so there is no card-backed step to compare. What matters for a seller is the product you build on top of it: a sign-up flow that stores users in a database like this one and a billing step that runs on Stripe.

TrialValid covers the billing step. It places a hold on the buyer's card at sign-up and starts the trial only when the hold succeeds, in your own Stripe account. Your database choice and your trial design are independent decisions. For the infrastructure side of margin, try the gross margin calculator.
