| At a glance | Basecamp |
|---|---|
| What it is | A project management and team communication tool with to-dos, message boards, chat, schedules and files in each project. |
| What it costs | A free plan, then Freelancer at $25, Studio at $59 and Pro at $99 a month, and Unlimited at $299 a month billed annually. Checked 2026-10-19. |
| Who built it | Per its own about page: 37signals, run by co-founder and CEO Jason Fried, who says the company has operated for 27 years. |
| Who it suits | Small teams and agencies that want one place for work and client communication, priced by project count rather than by person. |
| Verdict | A simple pricing model with no per-user fees. The limit that matters is the number of active projects. |
What Basecamp is
Basecamp groups work into projects. Each project holds the same set of tools: message boards for announcements, to-do lists for accountability, a card table for kanban-style tracking, group chat, scheduling, and storage for documents and files. The pricing page says the same core features come with every package.
It was built to replace the mix of email, chat and spreadsheets that scatters a project across places. For a software company it is more a way to coordinate people than a tool that touches the product, which is why it appears in a list of founder tools rather than in a billing stack.
Features worth knowing
- The same core tools in every plan: message boards, to-dos, card tables, chat, scheduling and file storage.
- No per-user fees on paid plans: Freelancer allows up to 20 people, and Studio, Pro and Unlimited allow unlimited people.
- Project templates, multiple tools per project and time tracking on higher plans, as the plan lists show.
- Command line access and skills for AI agents you run yourself, plus connectors for ChatGPT and Claude through an MCP server, listed on all plans, the free one too.
- Round-the-clock support on paid plans and a priority queue plus personalized onboarding on Unlimited.
- Annual billing by check, ACH, wire or card on the Unlimited plan.
Who is behind it
The about page is a founder letter. Jason Fried, co-founder and CEO of 37signals, the business that makes Basecamp, writes that the company began as a design firm that built a project tool for its own use, found its clients asking to use it, and then put it on the market. He says the product earned more than the design business within about a year of release, and that the company stopped doing web design.
The pages describe the company as privately held, profitable and bootstrapped. I have kept to the company description and not repeated the uptime and customer statements on the pricing page, which I did not verify.

Source: basecamp.com/pricing, read 2026-10-19. The page says archived or deleted projects do not count towards the active limit, and that Freelancer, Studio and Pro start with a 30-day free trial while Unlimited has 45 days.
My arithmetic on cost per active project at the limit: Freelancer about $8.33, Studio $5.90 and Pro about $3.96 a month. With no per-user fee, the number of people does not change the price, which is the main contrast with tools priced per seat.
Alternatives
Other tools teams weigh for project work include Asana, Trello, Notion, Linear and Monday, as well as a shared folder with a chat tool.
Who it fits
- A small agency running a few client projects at once, where a flat price helps.
- A team that wants chat, files, tasks and announcements together rather than in four tools.
- A founder with several contractors who would otherwise pay per seat.
- Not a fit: a team that needs dozens of active projects at once on a modest budget, since the active-project count is the limit.
Is it worth it
The price depends on projects, not people, so a ten-person team with three projects costs the same as a three-person one. For a team with many collaborators and few concurrent projects that is attractive; for one with many short projects the cap on active ones comes up fast, though archived projects do not count.
The free plan, with one project and five users, is enough to try the working style on a real piece of work. The trial periods are long enough to run a full project cycle on the paid tiers before choosing, which is the most reliable way to find out whether the way Basecamp organises work suits the team.
How it relates to a card-backed trial
Basecamp offers 30 days on the lower paid tiers and 45 days on Unlimited, and a free plan alongside them. The pages I read do not say whether a card is needed to start, so I make no claim either way.
A trial that long is a real test of habit: the team has time to move a project in and use it. For a seller with a higher-priced product the same idea holds, and a card hold with the end date shown, as TrialValid card holds arrange, keeps a long trial from ending in a surprise charge. The trial conversion calculator shows how trial length and the share who pay interact.
