On an A$100 in person card sale Square takes A$1.60 in Australia and you keep A$98.40. Charge A$101.63 to receive the full A$100.

Example with the default inputs:

| Input | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Payment amount | 100 |
| How the customer pays | In person: tap, insert or swipe |
| Seller sign-up date | Account opened from 30 May 2024 |

| Result | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Square fee | A$1.60 |
| You keep | A$98.40 |
| Effective rate | 1.60% |
| Rate applied | 1.6% |
| Charge to keep A$100.00 | A$101.63 |

Working:

1. Payment: A$100.00 paid as "In person: tap, insert or swipe".
2. Rate: 1.6%.
3. Percentage part: A$100.00 x 1.6% = A$1.60 (rounded to the nearest minor unit).
4. There is no fixed part, so the fee is A$1.60.
5. You keep A$100.00 - A$1.60 = A$98.40.
6. To keep A$100.00 after the fee, charge A$101.63: the fee on that is A$1.63.

## Square pricing in Australia in brief

Square's Australian price list has no fixed fee on cards. A card in person costs 1.6%, an online or invoice sale costs 2.2%, a keyed in or card on file sale costs 2.2%, and Afterpay costs 6% + A$0.30. That makes a card sum a single multiplication: A$100 in person is A$1.60.

Expressed as a sentence, the fee is the sale times the rate, rounded to the cent, plus the fixed amount where one exists. Expressed as symbols, f = round(a × r) + c, where c is zero on every card line, and the amount you keep is a − f.

## Each way a customer can pay

The same A$100 sale costs A$1.60 in person, A$2.20 online, A$2.20 keyed in and A$6.30 through Afterpay. Online and keyed in are priced alike.

| How the customer pays | Rate | Fee on A$100 | You keep | Charge to keep A$100 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| In person: tap, insert or swipe | 1.6% | A$1.60 | A$98.40 | A$101.63 |
| Online store, checkout, API or online invoice | 2.2% | A$2.20 | A$97.80 | A$102.25 |
| Mail or phone order: keyed in on a point of sale, invoice or Virtual Terminal, or card on file | 2.2% | A$2.20 | A$97.80 | A$102.25 |
| Afterpay | 6% + A$0.30 | A$6.30 | A$93.70 | A$106.70 |

## The sign-up date rule

An account opened from 30 May 2024 pays 1.6% in person. An older account pays 1.9% when the buyer pays at a Reader or a Stand or taps to pay, which is 0.3 points more. The tool has a selector for it, and the table shows what it costs on larger sales.

| Sale | Account opened from 30 May 2024 | Earlier account | Extra paid by earlier accounts |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| A$10.00 | A$0.16 | A$0.19 | A$0.03 |
| A$50.00 | A$0.80 | A$0.95 | A$0.15 |
| A$100.00 | A$1.60 | A$1.90 | A$0.30 |
| A$500.00 | A$8.00 | A$9.50 | A$1.50 |
| A$1,000.00 | A$16.00 | A$19.00 | A$3.00 |
| A$5,000.00 | A$80.00 | A$95.00 | A$15.00 |

A made up cafe with 900 sales a month of A$7.50 each pays A$108.00 in fees on the newer rate and A$126.00 on the older one.

## Where Afterpay changes the picture

Card sales lose the same share at any size, but Afterpay has a fixed A$0.30. On a sale of A$10 the fee takes 9.00%, and on a sale of A$500 it takes 6.06%. Square states the Afterpay rate excluding GST.

| Payment | In person fee (share) | Online store fee (share) | Afterpay fee (share) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| A$5.00 | A$0.08 (1.60%) | A$0.11 (2.20%) | A$0.60 (12.00%) |
| A$10.00 | A$0.16 (1.60%) | A$0.22 (2.20%) | A$0.90 (9.00%) |
| A$25.00 | A$0.40 (1.60%) | A$0.55 (2.20%) | A$1.80 (7.20%) |
| A$100.00 | A$1.60 (1.60%) | A$2.20 (2.20%) | A$6.30 (6.30%) |
| A$500.00 | A$8.00 (1.60%) | A$11.00 (2.20%) | A$30.30 (6.06%) |
| A$2,000.00 | A$32.00 (1.60%) | A$44.00 (2.20%) | A$120.30 (6.02%) |

## Pricing a sale so the full amount arrives

To receive a set figure after fees you need the smallest charge that leaves it, which is slightly more than the figure plus the fee on the figure. The table gives that charge for an in person card sale.

| You want to receive | Charge the customer | Fee on that charge |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A$10.00 | A$10.16 | A$0.16 |
| A$25.00 | A$25.41 | A$0.41 |
| A$50.00 | A$50.81 | A$0.81 |
| A$100.00 | A$101.63 | A$1.63 |
| A$300.00 | A$304.88 | A$4.88 |
| A$1,000.00 | A$1,016.26 | A$16.26 |

## Notes on the tool

- Hardware, plans and instant transfers are priced separately on the same page and are not in a sale fee.
- Seller sign-up date only changes the in person line, and the steps tell you when a selector does not apply to the line chosen.
- Amounts are worked in cents, half up, and a result that would round to zero is refused with a message.
- Custom rates are offered on the page for sellers with large annual volume, and are not modelled here.
- For dollars, see the [Square fee calculator](https://trialvalid.com/square-fee-calculator.md).

## Questions about Square fees in Australia

### What does Square charge on an A$100 in person sale in Australia?

A$1.60 at 1.6%, so A$98.40 is left. There is no fixed fee on this line, so the share stays at 1.60% however small the sale.

### Which sellers pay the higher in person rate?

The page gives a rate of 1.9% to sellers who signed up before 30 May 2024 using Square Reader, Stand or Tap to Pay. On A$100 that is A$1.90 instead of A$1.60, and on A$1,000 it is A$19.00 against A$16.00.

### How much more is an online sale than a card in person?

Online and mail or phone orders are 2.2%. On A$100 that is A$2.20 against A$1.60 in person, and on A$1,000 the gap is A$6.00 (A$22.00 against A$16.00).

### Do small sales cost proportionally more on cards?

Not on cards: with no fixed fee the share is the same on A$10 (A$0.16) as on A$1,000 (A$16.00). Afterpay is the exception, with 6% + A$0.30 costing A$0.90 on A$10, which is 9.00%.

### Is GST included in the Afterpay fee?

The price list states the Afterpay rate excluding GST, so A$6.30 on A$100 is before any GST on the fee. Card lines on the same page are given without that remark.

### What should I charge to receive A$300 in person?

Charge A$304.88. The fee on that charge is A$4.88, and A$300 remains.

### How is the fee rounded?

The percentage is applied to the sale and rounded half up to the cent. A A$7.50 in person sale costs A$0.12, and A$0.14 for a seller on the older rate.

### When were these Square rates read?

19 Oct 2026, from Square's Australian pricing page. Check that page before relying on a rate for a large decision.
