A first card held trial for a startup under $10,000 of MRR: what to set up in week one, how to read results, and what it costs.

## Who this is for

You sell a subscription through Stripe, your connected account is below $10,000 of monthly recurring revenue, and trial signups are something you watch by hand. There is no growth team and no billing engineer. One person sets up the trial, reads the numbers on Friday, and goes back to building the product.

On the current price list that puts you on the Starter plan at $29 a month, with a 14-day trial that costs $1 at signup. No setup fees. No transaction fees. All features are included on every plan, with no usage caps.

## Challenges this solves

- People start a trial with a throwaway email and never come back. A card that can be held for the plan price filters out some of the casual signups before they fill your trial list.
- The first charge arrives as a surprise. TrialValid shows the buyer the trial end date and the amount at signup, then sends a reminder, so the first invoice is expected.
- You cannot tell which channel brought a paying customer. Each signup keeps its first-touch campaign tags, so a paid trial can be traced to where the visitor came from.
- A failed card at the end of a trial costs you a customer you already won. The card is checked at signup and the hold is captured before the trial ends, with retries.
- Writing and testing page copy takes time you do not have. A model writes new page variants from a short description of your product, and you switch on the ones you like.

## Your first 30 days

### Week 1: connect and publish one page

Connect your Stripe account with the OAuth step, pick the Stripe price you want people to trial, and choose a trial length. Trials run from 1 to 90 days. Shorter trials mean a shorter wait before you learn whether a card converts, which suits a small team that needs signal fast. Publish a single page and read the confirmation and reminder text as a buyer would.

### Week 2: send a slice of your traffic

Point about one visitor in five at the new page, for example from one newsletter or one pricing page link, and keep your old signup for everyone else. A small share keeps a mistake cheap while you confirm that holds are placed, trials start, and the visit, signup and revenue figures you read back match what Stripe shows.

### Week 3: add one variant and turn on Slack

Describe your product in a few sentences and let the model write a second version of the page. Read it, edit anything that is off, and switch it on. Traffic then splits evenly between the active variants. Paste a Slack webhook so failed captures, lost holds and disputes reach you the day they happen.

### Week 4: read the numbers and widen the share

Compare visits, signups, conversions and revenue per variant. Run your own figures through the [trial conversion rate calculator](https://trialvalid.com/trial-conversion-rate-calculator.md) so you know what a trial is worth to you. If the numbers hold, move most of your signup traffic to the TrialValid page and promote the stronger variant.

## Recommended setup

1. One trial page for your main plan, with a trial length of 7 or 14 days.
2. The default failure setting, which leaves a failed first capture to Stripe and its own retries, so a good customer is not canceled over one declined attempt.
3. A Slack webhook with a high-value threshold set to your top plan price.
4. A statement descriptor your buyers recognize, so the charge on their card is not mistaken for a mistake.

## What the fee looks like as you grow

Pricing follows your MRR, so the fee rises only when your revenue does. The next step up from your band is Growth at $95 a month, for accounts from $10,000. At that lower edge the fee is 0.95% of MRR.

| Plan | Price per month | Connected-account MRR |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Starter | $29 | $0 up to $10,000 |
| Growth | $95 | $10,000 up to $50,000 |

### Do I need a developer to start?

Someone comfortable with a few API calls sets up the first page: connecting Stripe is a standard OAuth step, and pages, variants and results each have their own routes. After that, nobody needs to touch code to read results or switch variants on.

### What if I am under the Starter band and grow past it?

Your plan follows your connected account's MRR, which is rechecked about every 7 days. Crossing $10,000 moves you to Growth at $95 a month.

### Does a card hold take money from the buyer?

No. The plan price is held on the card and nothing is charged at signup. The capture happens before the trial ends, and the buyer is charged once.

### How long should my first trial be?

Start at 7 or 14 days. A shorter trial gets you a result sooner. You can change the length on the next page you publish.

### Can I run this beside my current signup flow?

Yes. Send a slice of traffic to the TrialValid page and keep the rest where it is until you trust the numbers.

### Where does the money go?

Into your own Stripe account. TrialValid never holds it and takes no per-transaction fee.
