| At a glance | SparkToro |
| --- | --- |
| What it is | An audience research tool that takes a plain-language description of an audience and reports where that audience spends time online. |
| What it costs | Free for 3 previews a month. Paid plans are listed at $38 (Personal, annual only), $150 (Business) and $300 (Agency) per month. Checked 2026-10-19. |
| Who built it | Per its own about page: founded by Casey Henry and Rand Fishkin, a software company based in Washington State. |
| Who it suits | Marketers and founders who want a list of sites, podcasts, channels and keywords an audience already uses. |
| Verdict | Priced by reports per month, so cost per report falls sharply on the larger plans. Worth it only if you will use the reports. |

## What SparkToro is

SparkToro answers a narrow question: given a described audience, where do those people read, watch, listen and search? You type a sentence about the audience and it builds a report from the data types the pricing page lists.

The point is targeting. A founder can use the output as a shortlist of publications to pitch, podcasts to appear on, channels to sponsor and keywords to write for, rather than defaulting to the same two ad networks. It sits upstream of a trial page: it helps decide where to send people, not what happens after they land.

## Features worth knowing

- Audience search from a sentence, with demographics such as age, seniority, company size and location.
- Lists of social accounts, social networks, websites, publications, podcasts, YouTube channels and subreddits the audience engages with.
- Search keywords, bio keywords and a view of how the audience talks to AI tools.
- An MCP server on paid plans, so reports can be run from an AI assistant.
- Take Action and Persona Builder on the Business and Agency plans.
- A separate public API sold on credit bundles, outside the subscription.

## Who is behind it

The about page says SparkToro was founded by Casey Henry and Rand Fishkin, who worked together earlier at Moz, and that the company is based in Washington State. It lists Rand Fishkin as CEO and co-founder, Casey Henry as CTO and co-founder and Amanda Natividad as chief evangelist.

The page states a mission of making audience research available to organizations without large budgets, and says the company is not seeking to raise additional capital and pursues profitable growth. Those are the company's own statements, quoted here as such.

## Pricing as stated

| Plan | Per month as listed | Reports per month | Users | Notes from the page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | 3 previews | 1 | Preview data only |
| Personal | $38 | 4 | 1 | Annual plan only; all data types; MCP access |
| Business | $150 | 25 | 10 | Page notes a $456 yearly saving; adds Take Action and Persona Builder |
| Agency | $300 | 250 | 100 | Page notes a $900 yearly saving; adds single sign-on and SCIM |

Source: [sparktoro.com/pricing](https://sparktoro.com/pricing), read 2026-10-19. The page has a monthly and annual toggle, and the figures above are the ones shown with the page's saving notes. It says a plan can be cancelled or changed at any time, stays active to the end of the billing cycle, and that partial use is not refunded except where an access problem was caused by SparkToro.

My arithmetic, assuming every report in the plan is used: Personal works out to $9.50 a report, Business to $6.00 and Agency to $1.20. If you would run four reports a month, the Personal plan is the match; if you would run ten, the Business plan carries unused room.

## Alternatives

Other tools in the audience and market research space include Similarweb, Audiense, BuzzSumo and SEMrush, and manual research on Reddit and podcast directories.

## Who it fits

- A founder choosing where to spend a first marketing budget and wanting a list of specific places.
- A small agency that researches several audiences a month and can use the 25-report plan.
- A content team looking for podcasts, publications and keywords for an audience it already knows by description.
- Not a fit: someone who needs one report a quarter, where the free previews may be enough.

## Is it worth it

The free tier shows previews only, so the way to judge fit is to run a few previews against an audience you already understand and see whether the lists match what you know. If they do, the paid plan buys full data types and room to run more.

Value depends on volume. A plan priced per report favours people who research often; a solo founder running a handful of reports a year is closer to the free tier. The stated rule that partial use is not refunded makes it sensible to start on the plan that matches the number of reports you will really run.

## How it relates to a card-backed trial

SparkToro uses a free tier of three previews a month rather than a timed trial. The buyer can see the shape of the output without a card, and a paid plan unlocks full data. That is a freemium on-ramp, closer to a sample than to a trial of the full product.

A seller who wants buyers to try the real product, not a sample, can pair a trial with a card check, as [TrialValid card holds](https://trialvalid.com/product/trial-holds.md) do, and then watch how many trials end as paying customers on a [trial conversion calculator](https://trialvalid.com/trial-conversion-rate-calculator.md).
